Cookie consent
Why do I need a cookie banner, and why did my data drop after I added one?
Laws in Europe, the UK, California, and other places say you must ask visitors before you track them. A cookie banner is how you ask. But a banner alone is not enough. The tags on your site have to actually listen to the answer. Many sites have a banner that looks right but still tracks everyone. Others block everything, so the data in their reports falls off a cliff.
Google has a feature called Consent Mode that helps with this. When a visitor says no, it still lets Google estimate totals without storing personal data. Set up correctly, you stay within the law and keep reports you can use.
Signs this is your problem
Your banner is live, but you are not sure if tags actually wait for a visitor to say yes.
Your Google Analytics numbers dropped sharply after you added a consent tool.
You have visitors from Europe, the UK, or California.
Different sites or clients each have a different consent setup.
