HIPAA-compliant tracking

Can a healthcare website use analytics without breaking HIPAA?

Yes, but it has to be set up with care. Most websites use small pieces of code called tags or pixels. They send data about visitors to tools like Google Analytics and Facebook. On a healthcare site, that data can include things like the page a person visited, a form they filled out, or the type of appointment they booked. That can count as protected health information, or PHI.

Government regulators have said that sending this kind of data to ad platforms can be a HIPAA violation. Many hospitals and clinics have been fined or sued over it. The good news is that you can still measure your marketing. You just need to control what data leaves your site and where it goes.

Signs this is your problem

You have Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, or other tags on pages where patients log in, book, or fill out forms.
Nobody on your team can list every tag on the site and what it collects.
Your compliance or legal team has asked questions about tracking and you are not sure how to answer.
You turned off all tracking to be safe, and now you have no idea how your marketing is doing.

What we do about it

Review every tag on your site and flag anything that could send PHI.
Move data collection to a server you control, so sensitive fields never reach third parties.
Remove or scramble sensitive data before it is sent anywhere.
Write it all down in plain language so your compliance team can approve it.
Who this is for

Hospitals, health systems, clinics, telehealth companies, and the agencies that market for them.
